BILBO was a beautiful and gregarious Bernese Mountain Dog who was certified as an International Therapy dog to give comfort to whomever needed it. Unfortunately, BILBO's life was cut way too short when he was diagnosed with histiocytosis on New Year's Eve, 2006. He lost his short battle against this aggressive form of cancer on February 3, 2007, just before his 7th birhtday (March 8). What many don't know is that this disease, though commonly referred to as the "Berner disease" due to its prevalence in Bernese Mountain Dogs, has also taken, too early, the lives of many dog breeds, cats and even children ... yes the two legged, human kind. In children this cancer is called Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH).
BILBO always loved being around people, especially those who were laughing. He had a special ability to connect with anyone who's path he crossed, passing on loving smiles. So, it is a fitting tribute that his short life be marked every year for his birthday with Another Party. What better reason to party than to celebrate life and its potential, and at the same time contribute to funding research into ridding those most innocent of this insidious disease?
To that end, I have formed BILBO B.A.S.H. Each year, funds raised are donated to an organization that studies cancer in the hopes of a cure and better treatments for both animals and humans. I hope that in the future, this party will make the yearly "mustn't miss" list, holding new surprises, silent auctions, information, new friends and, most importantly, laughter.
